With a new Yu-Gi-Oh! animated series on the horizon, which introduces an all new kind of monster, fans will be sure to hurry to stores on July 12 to get these revolutionary monsters that make their North American debut in the 2011 Starter Deck (and in advance of August's booster set featuring the new monsters). Serving two roles, the 2011 Starter Deck is designed to teach new players the ins & outs of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG and to teach current players about this brand new category of monsters.

The newest kind of Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG monsters are here! And they’ve come from DEEP SPACE!

Xyz Monsters are made from anti-matter, and have traveled here from the other side of a black hole. They’re landing in Duels at the speed of light, ready to kick butt and take names.

What’s an Xyz Monster?

First things first: It’s pronounced ik-seez. (You say it like a word. Don’t just spell out the letters!)

Xyz Monsters get their name because they’re so easy to Summon. You can make Xyz Monsters from anything: any monster Type, any Attribute, any theme. You can make monsters that look like giant toys, or fearsome dragons, or even monsters that are made of numbers. You can make them out of anything, even the letters x, y, and z.

Since they’ve traveled through a black hole to enter our universe, Xyz Monsters live in Reverse Time, so they do lots of things backwards:

    * Xyz Monsters are pitch-black.

    * The letters on them are bright white.

    * They have a Rank instead of a Level (with yellow & black stars, instead of yellow & red)

    * Their stars are on the left instead of the right.

But the weirdest thing of all is that whenever you Summon an Xyz Monster, the stuff you used to make it sort of sticks around!

How to Xyz Summon

If you want to Xyz Summon, you need some face-up monsters on the field with the same level. You’ll also need an Xyz Monster in your Extra Deck that fits that Level. (Example: If you’re using 2 Level 4 monsters as your Xyz Material, you need an Xyz Monster that lists “2 Level 4 monsters” as the materials.)

When you’re ready to Xyz Summon, just take the Xyz Material monsters and pile them up on the field. Then take the matching Xyz Monster you’re Summoning out of your Extra Deck, and Summon it. Then place the pile of Xyz Materials underneath it.

That’s right: The Xyz Materials go UNDERNEATH the Xyz Monster. Then you can use them to pay costs for Xyz Monster effects, or to activate special Spell and Trap Cards that only work for Xyz Monsters!

Whenever you use an Xyz Material to pay a cost, or activate an Xyz Monster’s ability, the card will tell you to “detach” 1 Xyz Material. That means you take one of the Xyz Materials you stacked up under your Xyz Monster, and send it to the Graveyard.

When any player's monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the attack. When this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no Xyz Materials: Destroy this card.

Gachi Gachi Gantetsu

EARTH/Rock - Xyz/Rank 2/Effect/500/1800

2 x Level 2 monsters

If this face-up card on the field would be destroyed, you can remove 1 Exceed Material Monster from it instead. While this card is face-up on the field, all face-up monsters you control gain 200 ATK and DEF for each of this card's Exceed Material Monsters.

Grenosaurus

FIRE/Dinosaur - Xyz/Rank 3/Effect/2000/1900

2 x Level 3 monsters

When this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle and sends it to the Graveyard, you can remove 1 Exceed Material Monster from this card to inflict 1000 damage to your opponent.

Xyz Energy

Normal Spell Card

Remove 1 Exceed Material Monster from an Exceed Monster you control to select 1 face-up monster your opponent controls. Destroy that monster.

Xyz Effect

Normal Trap

When you Exceed Summoned an Exceed Monster, select 1 face-up card on the field and activate this card. Destroy the selected card.

Reinforced Space

Normal Trap

All face-up Exceed Monsters gain 300 ATK for each of their Exceed Material Monsters until the End Phase.
